The Gentle Giant with a Divine Temper
Some heroes are born to greatness. Others have greatness thrust upon them. Sir Hugh Janus would probably prefer a warm bowl of stew, a comfortable chair, and an afternoon spent feeding field mice.
A 32-year-old Aasimar and Paladin of Devotion, Hugh is a gentle giant with the heart of a protector, the build of a well-fed fur trapper, and the unmistakable energy of John Candy wandering into a fantasy adventure. He’s kind, a little clumsy, occasionally timid, and blessed with a sense of humor that rarely rises above a well-timed fart joke. Unfortunately, his definition of well-timed is questionable at best.
But beneath that soft exterior lies a knight who knows exactly when to stand his ground.
A Knight of the Old Woods
Raised by his grandmother, Margrit Janus, Hugh grew up near the old woods of Ten Towns, where he lived a humble life trapping for food and fur, hunting, and helping build and maintain the homes of his neighbors.
His village wasn’t simply where he lived. It was his family.
Hugh learned early that loyalty wasn’t something you talked about. It was something you demonstrated through compassion, patience, and the willingness to stand between danger and the people who mattered.
That devotion eventually earned him a knighthood after he helped protect others during a siege by barbarians of the tundra.
Unfortunately, even a knight cannot defend against every threat.
Hugh’s beloved village was eventually burned to make way for a shopping mall through the questionable application of eminent domain. Somewhere out there is someone responsible for destroying his home, and Hugh intends to find them.
Divine justice may be coming to a retail development near you.
A Shield, a Flail, and a Whole Lot of Smite
As a Paladin of Devotion, Hugh believes his first responsibility is protecting life. His shield is ready for anyone who needs defending, while his healing abilities provide comfort and care when the fighting ends.
His most treasured possession is an ancestral Flail of Warning, passed down by his grandmother. The weapon alerts him to approaching danger, even while he sleeps, which is particularly useful for a man whose usual response to unexpected trouble is:
“Ahhhh! Look out for the thing!”
Hugh prefers diplomacy, clever thinking, and improvisation before resorting to violence. He would much rather settle a disagreement over an ale than with a weapon.
However, when diplomacy fails and someone threatens those under his protection, the gentle giant becomes something considerably less gentle.
Hugh fights defensively, patiently holding the line until the opportunity presents itself.
And when he lands a critical hit?
That’s when the smites of ruin begin.
A Heart Bigger Than His Armor
Hugh is not a natural conversationalist. In fact, talking is arguably one of his greatest weaknesses, alongside trusting people far too quickly and laughing at moments when absolutely nobody else finds anything funny.
He’s the sort of person who will offer a stranger food, give someone the benefit of the doubt, and quietly tend to the wounded while everyone else argues about whose fault the disaster was.
He also believes that people should be allowed to make their own mistakes, even spectacularly terrible ones. Experience is a wonderful teacher, after all, although resurrection magic may occasionally be required to finish the lesson.
Outside of combat, Hugh is a capable trapper, a dedicated healer, and an enthusiastic provider of snacks. He enjoys cooking, cleaning, exploring, and the simple pleasures of good company.
And wherever Hugh goes, his dog Mike Hat holds a special place in his story.
Despite everything he’s lost, Hugh hasn’t abandoned his belief that life is sacred. He knows he cannot save everyone, but that has never stopped him from trying.
The Measure of a Hero
Hugh has little patience for hypocrisy, particularly from people who demand that others follow rules they refuse to obey themselves. To him, goodness is demonstrated through actions, not proclaimed through authority.
His philosophy is simple: treat others as you would wish to be treated.
At least until they give you a very good reason not to.
If Hugh ever came into extraordinary wealth, he wouldn’t seek a castle or a throne. He’d buy a modest home and farm, then use the rest to help rebuild and improve the community around him.
His ideal successful adventure isn’t measured in treasure, glory, or defeated enemies.
It’s a nice picnic.
Because beneath the armor, the divine power, and the occasional catastrophic burst of righteous fury, Hugh is still that boy from the woods who wants the people around him to be safe, warm, and fed.
He may be quiet. He may be timid. He may even laugh at the worst possible moment.
But when someone he loves needs protecting, Sir Hugh Janus will be the first to stand up.
And as Hugh himself would say:
“I can do this all day long.”
